About Us
|
| MLBA builds community between members through quality educational programs, networking opportunities, and social events. MLBA proudly supports similarly-focused student groups at all of Minnesota's law schools, as well as efforts to assure that Minnesota is a community where legal professionals can thrive, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. MLBA is a recognized and respected affiliate of the Minnesota State Bar Association, and of the Hennepin and Ramsey County Bar Associations, and is a voice for these concerns within these groups. MLBA has successfully worked with these organizations to oppose anti-GLBT legislation, expand member benefits to include domestic partners, include pertinent issues within diversity and educational efforts, update policies of the Minnesota judiciary, and promote legal reform. MLBA is the Minnesota affiliate of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA), which provides a similar voice at the national level, including within the American Bar Association. |
History |
| The Minnesota Lavender Bar Association (MLBA) was founded in 1996 as a special project of the OutFront Minnesota Legal Program, in response to the limited opportunities for GLBTI lawyers and law students to network, learn together, and address homophobia within the profession. MLBA was reorganized in 1999 as an independent, 501(c)(6), organization. Since that time, MLBA has become the primary sponsor of the Regional Lavender Law conference for local GLBTI attorneys and students, which started in 1991, and has become an affiliate of NLGLA. |
