MSBA seeks comments to Quie Commission Report on judicial elections process
Following a year of study, the Quie Commission report and recommendations have been released. While the fallout from the White decision may not seem like much yet, the potential for damage to our judicial system is grave. We in the legal profession must take the lead in implementing a solution to ensure the third branch of government remains strong and impartial for generations to come. A fundamental change is afoot, not unlike when the appellate court was created or when county and district courts were merged.
Even though a number of MSBA members served on the Commission, the MSBA has not adopted the Quie Commission Report. The report has been referred to our Judicial Elections Committee, which is charged with formulating a recommendation for the MSBA Assembly. This recommendation will then go the Legislative Committee before reaching the Assembly for a vote at their meeting on June 29.
All of us have a stake in this issue as professionals, as individuals and as members of a community. I ask that you take the time to read the report, which you can find online at:
http://www.keepmnjusticeimpartial.org/FinalReportAndRecommendation.pdf
and provide your comments on or before May 18 to Nancy Mischel, MSBA staff and liaison to the Judicial Elections Committee. She will forward your comments to the Committee for consideration. If you wish to speak directly to the Committee at their meeting on May 21, please let Nancy know by May 16. You can reach her at:
nmischel@mnbar.org or 612/278-6331.
I look forward to the discussion.
Best Regards,
Patrick J. Kelly

MN State Bar Committees

I will soon be appointing members and chairs for the Association’s committees for the 2007–08 bar year. I am writing in order to invite and encourage the members of the Lavender Bar Association to join a committee. The committees work on many important issues around the administration of justice, service to the profession and the public, and the Association’s operations. A complete list of committees is available on the MSBA website: www.mnbar.org. Signing up is easy: just visit the Association’s website, click on “Committees”, and follow the link to our online application form. Or you can use the following link to sign up: http://www2.mnbar.org/asp/Committee/form.asp
As you may know, the State Bar Association has worked for many years toward greater diversity in its membership and leadership. The opportunities for service and leadership on committees and in sections are a significant means to that end. I hope that you will encourage your members to take advantage of this opportunity. Thank you very much. Please write or call me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Brian Melendez
MSBA President-Elect
