MSBA to vote April 24 on unmarried-couples task force

At its April 24 meeting, the MSBA Assembly will vote on a resolution authorizing the creation of an ad hoc task force to examine the rights, or lack thereof, enjoyed by unmarried couples to determine whether changes to Minnesota law would be desirable.  The resolution states:

RESOLVED:  That, in light of the disparity between legal rights and protections available to same-sex couples as compared to different-sex couples, the President of the Minnesota State Bar Association create a task force to review the current state of Minnesota law and to make recommendations as to desirable changes, if any, in the law to address this disparity.  The President is encouraged to invite broad participation by MSBA members from relevant sections and committees with a goal of producing a report to be considered by the MSBA Assembly no later than its June, 2009 meeting.

This resolution originated in the MSBA Diversity Committee last fall and has subsequently been formally endorsed by ten additional MSBA committees, sections, and affiliated organizations.  A majority of the Assembly, which includes two MLBA members, must vote in favor for the task force to be created.  The Assembly meets Thursday, April 24, at 3pm at the Minnesota CLE Conference Center (3rd floor, City Center, downtown Minneapolis);  MLBA members are welcome to attend, but only Assembly members may vote.  If you know an Assembly member, please contact them to express your support!
