Come visit the MLBA tent at Twin Cities GLBT Pride in Minneapolis’ Loring Park, Saturday June 28 and Sunday June 29! We will be located at booth space #5004 in University Row. Thanks to all the folks who have volunteered to help MLBA return to Pride after a hiatus of several years! This year, we invite MLBA members and friends to stop by our tent, and drop off business cards to be entered into a drawing for a free membership to NLGLA or a free registration to Lavender Law in San Francisco in September! Also, pick up a coupon worth $5 off the registration for MLBA’s own Regional Lavender Law 2009, taking place January 31 at William Mitchell College of Law. We will also be gathering information for a members’ directory. Please visit!

MSBA’s unmarried-couples task force gets off the ground

At its April meeting, the MSBA Assembly voted to create a task force to examine the rights of unmarried couples in Minnesota, and to recommend statutory reform where desirable. The task force co-chairs are MLBA members David Ahlvers and Ann Viitala, and other MLBA members, including board members Jane Bowman and Phil Duran, are also involved. An organizational meeting will be held shortly to begin the substantive work.

MSBA Assembly set to approve diversity report June 17

The MSBA is expected to approve a second diversity-related report June 17, which will follow up on its 2006 study of diversity issues within the Minnesota legal profession. The 2008 report will discuss recommendations and best practices legal employers of all types should consider with regard to issues of race, gender, sexual orientation/gender identity, religion, and disability. These reports are the first such efforts by the MSBA which include discussion of sexual orientation- and gender identity-related concerns. MLBA is represented in the Assembly by Dave Ahlvers and co-chair Kelly Just Olmstead, and in the task force that has put together both reports by Phil Duran.

National GLBT legal organizations issue advisory in light of California marriage ruling

Several national GLBT-rights litigation organizations, and other national GLBT organizations, have joined together to issue an advisory to the community in anticipation of the availability to same-sex couples of marriage licenses in California beginning at 7:01pm CDT June 16.  The advisory urges caution with respect to litigation and other issues related to marriage, and is of particular interest to lawyers with significant numbers of GLBT clients. That advisory is available here in PDF format

“Advertising” opportunities in the MLBA newsletter!

Looking for a chance to get word out to MLBA members and friends? At its June meeting, the MLBA Board approved an advertising” policy for use on a trial (six-month) basis. For now, the policy contemplates free announcements of such things as job openings, available office space, and other law-related matters other than simple advertisements of services. This opportunity is available to MLBA members only. For more information click here: http://www.mnlavbar.org/membership.htm
