NLGLA changes name, seeks committee and ABA participation

Effective September 7, 2008 the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association became the National LGBT Bar Association, in a move announced at its annual Lavender Law conference in San Francisco. The name-change reflects the expansion of the organization’s constituency and work relating to transgender people and legal issues. The organization also is inviting members to assist in its Development/Fundraising, Programs, and Family Law Day 2009 planning committees, as well as to represent the Bar Association in the ABA, including:

- Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates

- Delegate to ABA Commission on Women in the Profession

- Representative to the Council of the ABA's Young Lawyers Division

- Delegate to ABA AIDS Coordinating Committee

- Delegate to ABA Family Law Section

- ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity

More info on ABA commissions/sections can be found at: http://www.abanet.org/ These opportunities are available to members of NLGLA/the National LGBT Bar Association, and of the ABA for ABA-related opportunities. To express interest, please contact National LGBT Bar Association Secretary Jenny Ryan at jennyryan@gmail.com.

Minnesota organizations issue statement opposing marriage-equality litigation

Mirroring a similar statement issued by numerous national GLBT-rights organizations; OutFront Minnesota, Project 515, and Rainbow Families issued a joint statement discouraging the filing of marriage-equality lawsuits in Minnesota.  The Minnesota and national statements may be found here [http://www.mnlavbar.org/News.htm].  MLBA has not taken a position on this statement, but is interested in hearing member views. Please send comments to: info@mnlavbar.org
