The Minnesota Lavender Bar Association is a proud member of the Minnesotans United for All Families Coalition. Minnesotans United is the official campaign working to defeat the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2012. Minnesotans United is supported by a broad coalition of organizations, faith communities, businesses, organized labor, community leaders and elected officials. MLBA is committed to working closely with the coalition over the next 13 months, in order to act on our mission to promote equality and justice in the legal profession and the LGBT community in Minnesota.

A strong grassroots campaign is the only way to defeat the amendment next year and only you can help build it!

If you are looking for a “family-friendly” training option, consider attending one of the four sessions with free child care, sponsored by the Family Equality Council. Register for a training with child care at Family Equality Council’s website.

Since the beginning of 2009, we have witnessed significant changes, both big and small, at the federal level that will forever change the legal landscape our community experiences. From the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” to the rapidly evolving legal landscape in the struggle for marriage equality, significant progress is being made. How has this progress been possible, and what might lie ahead? What lessons can we learn for advancing LGBT equality in Minnesota?

• Sharon McGowan, an attorney with the Appellate Section of the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice, who will discuss the recent efforts of the Civil Rights Division, and initiatives underway in other parts of the federal government, to ensure equal justice under law for all irrespective of sexual orientation and gender identity, and,

• Anthony Winer, professor of constitutional law at William Mitchell College of Law, will examine some of the LGBT-rights cases that may come before the US Supreme Court in the next few years, potentially including challenges to DOMA and Prop 8, and consider the implications federal developments for Minnesota. After the program please stay for refreshments provided by Out!Law.
